Google to reveal PC operating system

It was only a matter of time; 9:37pm Pacific Time on July 7, 2009 in an innocent appearing blog post to be exact.

With “cloud computing”—a term used to describe the new world of light weight computing where local storage and processing matters less—on the rise, Google is taking the next generation operating system (OS) war to a new playing field. One that Microsoft is likely unprepared to compete as effectively as it has in the 1980s-era shrink wrap software business (Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows).

Google owns search; and hence the majority of online advertising dollars. We know this.

But Google also is playing an increasing role in all things cloud computing, such as productivity applications (Google Docs, Gmail, Calendar), mobile operating systems (Android), and news aggregation and syndication (Google News).

Meantime, Microsoft seems to be in a perpetual state of catch-up (e.g. the new Bing search engine), despite the college coach-like banter of chief Steve Ballmer.

Google is borne of a different generation, one detached from the old school paradigm of shrink wrap software. In the “old days” we would walk to a store, buy the latest operating system (on CD, later on DVD), bring it home, take 3 hours to install it, and then continue to install all kinds of CD-based applications like Microsoft Office.

But, in this new world, of cloud computing, you can virtually eliminate not only the walk to the store, but the entire installation process. Applications live in the cloud. Fortunately that means no tedious upgrades and annual walks to the local computer store.

So, tonight, at 9:37pm pacific time, Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management and Linus Upson, Engineering Director, jointly posted an innocent enough blog post. But its ramifications are unquestioned. Indeed, virtually minutes later, mainstream media were already picking up the story. The New York Times tweeted. Others commented. Blogs lit up. As I write this, the tech world is abuzz.

The announcement highlights:

Google announcing: Google Chrome Operating System
Google Chrome OS is an “open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks”
Netbooks running it will be available second half 2010
“Speed, simplicity and security” are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS.

This is not a technology announcement. But a potential game-changer.

Is Microsoft looking into the abyss?

Probably not exactly. But it does signal a titanic struggle ahead, of which the likes it has not seen before. Google is no Netscape.

From the Google blog post:

People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don’t want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates. And any time our users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend time on the Internet.

This is big news, and finally awakens a slow year in general for tech. Without Google, Microsoft could continue it’s 5-year upgrade march for Windows and Office. Thankfully, we have alternatives.

It should mean increased competition which results in innovation, lower price points, and more choice. And that’s all good for people like you and I: the consumer… living in the golden age of cloud and Internet computing.

Introducing the Google Chrome OS

It’s been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.

We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. Michael Jackson Open Casket photo, could this be true? According to X17, the funeral of Michael Jackson will be with an open casket. We are just a few minutes away for the Michael Jackson memorial to begin, and the Staples Center is full. Here’s what X17 reported:

Jackson’s family is reportedly still considering an open casketviewing at the public memorial tomorrow, an event which is expected to draw far more than the 17,500 people who will receive tickets.

Being a skilled confidence man is both a blessing and a curse. If you truly excel at the long con, raising it to a form of art, marks will never know they've been taken. But if you become renowned for such artistry, when it is synonymous with your very name, people never believe you're off the grift, even when you're playing straight.

Such is the life of Roger Stone, political operative, Nixon-era dirty trickster, professional lord of mischief. It's hard to assume he's not up to something, because he always is. He once said of himself, "If it rains, it was Stone." For that's the view most people take of him. Three years ago, everyone from the DNC's Terry McAuliffe to the leftwing blogosphere blamed him for leaking George W. Bush's forged Air National Guard records, the ones that looked like they would damn Bush, but ultimately blew up Dan Rather's career. It's preposterous, he says, a triple bank shot that no one could ever have conceived of. "I get blamed for things I have nothing to do with," he says, somewhat wounded. But when asked about all the things he doesn't get blamed for that he does have something to do with, he thinks a bit, then shrugs. "It does balance itself out," he says.

Naïfs might say he's a cancer on the body politic, everything that is wrong with today's system. But maybe he is just its purest distillation: Politics is war, and he is one of its fiewith the battle scars to prove it.

The first time I laid eyes on Roger Stone he was standing poolside at a press conference on the roof of the Hotel L'Ermitage in Beverly Hills. With a horseshoe pinkie ring refracting rays from the California sun and a gangster chalk-stripe suit that looked like it had been exhumed from the crypt of Frank Costello, Stone was there to help his friend and longtime client Donald Trump explore a Reform party presidential candidacy in 2000.

Actually, it was more complicated than that. After having recruited Pat Buchanan to seek the nod ("You have to beat somebody," Stone says), he pushed Trump into the race. Trump relentlessly attacked Buchanan as having "a love affair with Adolf Hitler," but ended up folding. A weakened Buchanan went on to help the Reform party implode, and Republicans suffered no real third-party threat, as they had in 1992, thus helping Stone accomplish his objective. If, in fact, that was his objective. These things are often hard to keep track of with Roger Stone.

Trump's short-lived campaign provided lots of memorable Stone moments. There was the scene on the roof, where Stone, a dandy by disposition who boasts of having not bought off-the-rack since he was 17--he's now 56--taught reporters how to achieve perfect double-dimples underneath their tie knots, while providing them hand sanitizers should they want to shake hands with the germophobe Trump. Then there were the hardball negotiations he drove backstage at the Tonight Show, where he promised access to the dressing room, but only if we refrained from "making fun of Mr. Trump's hair" in print.

Racy Facebook Sahel Kazemi Photos - On Sunday police ruled the death of former Tennesse Titan quarterback Steve McNair to be a homicide.

The classification came one day after his bullet-riddled body was found in a Nashville apartment along with the body of his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, whose death has not been classified.

Mechelle McNair, Steve's wife, is said to be shocked and emorionally distraught.

McNair, who was 36, was shot four times -- twice in the head, twice in the chest. A semi-automatic pistol was found underneath the body of 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi, who was shot in the head.

The second picture shows two girls sitting on top a black Cadillac Escalade. McNair gave a black Escalade to Kazemi for her 20th birthday in May.

Two days earlier, Kazemi had been arrested in the early hours fordriving under the influence. McNair was in the passenger's seat at the time of the traffic stop.

Ezra Merkin Charged With Fraud

NEW YORK — New York's attorney general filed civil fraud charges Monday against a hedge fund manager who funneled $2.4 billion to Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff without telling clients where their money was going.

The complaint accuses J. Ezra Merkin, the former chairman of GMAC Financial Services, of concealing his links to Madoff and lying to investors about what he was doing with their money, telling most he was personally investing their cash in things like distressed debt.

Over the years, Merkin collected $470 million in fees and performance bonuses from his clients, the suit said. It said many of those customers, which included several large charities and colleges, had no idea where their money really was until December, when Madoff was arrested.

"Merkin duped individual investors, non-profits, and charities into believing he was responsibly managing their investments, when in actuality he was dumping them into history's largest Ponzi scheme," Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said in a statement.

The complaint also accused Merkin of mingling his personal funds with the accounts of his management company, Gabriel Capital Group, and using some of the company's funds for personal purchases, including $91 million worth of artwork for his apartment.

Merkin's attorney, Andrew Levander, called the lawsuit "hasty," "ill-conceived" and "without merit, and he denied that clients had been kept in the dark.

"Contrary to the attorney general's allegation, investors in the Ascot Funds were well aware that the money was being invested with Madoff," Levander said in a statement. Some of those investors had even met with Madoff personally, he said.

He said Merkin had investigated and analyzed Madoff and his trading strategy before investing.

"Unfortunately," he wrote, "Mr. Merkin's due diligence, just like the detailed investigations performed by countless others, including regulators, was thwarted by the intricate, fraudulent scheme perpetrated by Madoff."

Merkin also lost millions of dollars of his own money in the scheme, although those dollar amounts pale in comparison to the losses of his clients. One of Merkin's funds, Ascot Partners, sunk nearly every penny of its more than $1.7 billion in assets into Madoff's scheme.

Cuomo's suit, filed in state court in Manhattan, demands that Merkin repay all of the fees he collected from his clients over the years, plus damages.

The lawsuit is the second major regulatory action by a state against one of Madoff's so-called "feeder funds," which supplied him with billions of dollars in investor money.

On April 1, Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin accused Fairfield Greenwich Group of Connecticut of civil fraud for activities related to investments with Madoff.

Galvin accused the company, which had a $7.2 billion account with Madoff, of failing to disclose concerns about Madoff's operation to investors. Fairfield Greenwich officials have, like Merkin, also professed that they were innocent victims of the scam.

Madoff pleaded guilty in March to swindling thousands of investors out of billions of dollars in what could be the largest Ponzi scheme in history.

Many of those investors came to Madoff indirectly through hedge funds like Fairfield and Ascot.

Some of those investors have also sued. And Merkin was sued Monday in New York by Mortimer Zuckerman, the real estate magnate and publisher of the New York Daily News. Zuckerman said in the suit that he and his charitable trust collectively lost $40 million in the scheme.

Alex DaSilva, or Alex Da Silva, was arrested on Saturday, April 4. Da Silva is suspected of having sexually assaulted his dance students.

Alex Da Silva was accused of sexual assault on four of his dance students. The alleged sex assaults occurred between May 2003 and March 28 2009. Police claimed that Da Silva tricked women into visiting his homes in Van Nuys and North Hollywood. Police said Da Silva used a ruse to lure the women into his bedroom where he raped them.

Alex da Silva is a famous salsa dancer, TV dancer, dance instructor and choreographer. Da Silva is being jailed pending a $3.8 million bail.

Da Silva earned his fame when he became the world salsa dance champion. Da Silva won the World Salsa Dance Championships twice in 2002 and 2007. Da Silva became a dance teacher at the Edge Performing Arts Center in Hollywood and Mayan Club in Los Angeles.

Da Silva’s fame now on TV stems from the fact that he choreographs and dances for the reality TV show dance competition, “So You Think You Can Dance”

iPhoto's face detection isn't perfect, but we can't blame the software for spotting a face in this unbaked batch of cookies.

I mean, c'mon, it looks like just a teddy bear! And maybe a teddy bear face doesn't constitute a human face to some of you in the audience, but I like to think that our world has grown beyond such prejudices. I like to believe that we live in a world in which any face can be considered a face.

The only way this iPhone spot could have been better is if it found the Virgin Mary in a burnt piece of bread. It'll happen. Just give it time.

JIVERLY VOONG: Binghamton Shooter INFO

The gunman, Jiverly Voong, held dozens of people hostage for several hours before shooting himself to death, police said.
According to multiple state law enforcement officials, the gunman entered the one-story American Civic Association in downtown Binghamton about 10 a.m. today and began a shooting spree.

Jiverly Voong is from nearby Johnson City and has an alternate name:

He allegedly walked into the center wearing a greenjacket and dark-rimmed glasses with a hunting knife tucked into the waistband of his pants.
Voong had backed his car up to the back door of the building to block any escape before he went around to the front door and started to execute people.

NBC also reported the gunman may have been a Vietnamese immigrant named Jiverly Voong.

Jiverly Voong is believed to be 42: "Jiverly Voong, a 42 year old local man of Vietnamese origin."

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - A gunman opened fire at an immigration services center in downtown Binghamton on Friday, killing as many as 13 people before authorities found him dead, officials said.

Gov. David Paterson said at a news conference that 12 or 13 people had been killed.

A law enforcement official said the body of the man believed to be the gunman was found in an office of the American Civic Association building. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the details of an ongoing hostage situation and was talking on condition of anonymity.

A man has been accused of attempting to pass a $360 billion check, which he claims was given to him by his girlfriend’s mother to start a record business, Fort Worth police said.

Charles Ray Fuller

Charles Ray Fuller, 21, of Crowley, was arrested on April 22 on an accusation of forgery, police said.

Police responded to a report of a man attempting to pass the check about 4 p.m. that day at the Chase bank in the 8600 block of South Hulen Street, Fort Worth police Lt. Paul Henderson said.

The personal check was not made out to Mr. Fuller and when the bank contacted the check owner, the woman said she did not write a check for $360 billion.

Mr. Fuller was also accused of unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of marijuana, Lt. Henderson said. He may also face a theft charge in Crowley.

Lt. Henderson said he did not know if Mr. Fuller and his girlfriend were still together.

First lady Michelle Obama hugged Queen Elizabeth yesterday at Buckingham Palace in London. While that may sound like it's no big deal, actually is a breach of royal protocol. No one is supposed to touch the queen. The queen reportedly didn't mind, however.

Michelle Obama hugs Queen - breaks royal protocol!

When first lady Michelle Obama hugged Queen Elizabeth yesterday, it was reminiscent of the classic American masterpiece “Tommy Boy” when Chris Farley, embracing his new stepbrother said, “Brothers don’t shake hands, brothers gotta hug!”

Now while it was perfectly acceptable and quite frankly — touching — when this act of love occurred in the movie, it’s not supposed to happen with the queen.

Queens don’t hug!

In fact, it is considered a breach of royal protocol.

Throne

Apparently the first lady and the queen were hanging out in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace. (It would be immature to make a crack wondering if it was the “Royal Throne Room” so we won’t mention it.)

An official photo of the world leaders had just been taken, and while they were meandering out, the queen and the first lady struck up a conversation.

Eyewitness

What happened next rocked the world. Or at least Britain. Get a load of how the Daily Mail reported it:

“The Queen started chatting to Michelle Obama. She appeared to look up at her and make a comment about how tall she was,” said an eyewitness. “As she did, she put her arm around Mrs Obama and rested her gloved hand on the small of her back.”

“Almost simultaneously, Mrs Obama put her arm around the Queen’s shoulders rather more firmly. The pair then looked at their feet and appeared to be discussing their shoes.”

“The Queen then dropped her arm and, a few seconds later, Michelle did the same. The entire exchange lasted around eight to ten seconds but was absolutely extraordinary,” gasped the observer.

Historymaking

Overly dramatic? Apparently not. The reporter goes on to say, “No-one - including the ladies-in-waiting standing nearby - could believe their eyes. In 57 years, the Queen has never been seen to make that kind of gesture and it is certainly against all protocol to touch her.”

It makes you wonder if in times past you would have heard an immediate “Off with her head!”

They take this so seriously, apparently, that when Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating dared touch the queen back in 1992, he was besieged with criticism, later earning the nickname “Lizard of Oz.”

Thankfully Michelle didn’t go all Blarney Stone on Her Majesty.

Best friends

The good news is no one seems to care. In fact, the BBC reports that the queen really liked Michelle.

“Now we’ve met, will you please keep in touch?” the queen said.

Then Michelle brought the house down when she replied, “No pun intended?”

(OK. We made up that last line. But it would have been a good response.)

CBS cancels Guiding Light

CBS is canceling the longest-running drama on TV, the daytime soap "Guiding Light."

The network is ending the show after 72 years and more than 15,700 episodes on television and radio. The series will broadcast its final episode Friday, Sept. 18.

" 'Guiding Light' has achieved a piece of television history that will never be matched; it has crossed mediums, adapted its stories to decades of social change and woven its way through generations of audiences like no other," said Nancy Tellem, president of CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment Group. "This daytime icon will always be an indelible part of CBS' history, with a legacy of innovation and reputation for quality and excellence at every step of the way. While its presence will be missed, its contributions will always be celebrated and never be forgotten."

"Light" launched as a 15-minute network program in 1952, expanded to 30 minutes in 1968, then went to an hour in 1977. In recent years, however, "Light" and partner “As the World Turns" have long become a drag on the ticket in CBS' daytime lineup. Two years ago CBS worked with producers of both shows to try to modernize the "Light" production process while cutting costs, using smaller crews shooting with nimble digital cameras.

CBS has not yet announced what will replace "Light."

"No show in daytime or primetime or any time has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years as 'Guiding Light,' " said Barbara Bloom, senior vp daytime programs at CBS. "We thank the cast, crew and producers -- past and present -- who delivered this entertainment institution, the beloved characters and the time-honored stories to our audience every day for seven decades. It's been a privilege to work with such an extraordinarily talented group of people."

The radio show's original story line centered on minister Rev. John Ruthledge and the fictional Chicago suburb Five Points. Today's show is set in the fictional town of Springfield, and revolves around several families.

The sufferers - found in clusters along USA coastlines -- describe them as 'fiber 'machines' which thrive in the human body and apparently use the host body's bio-electric energy, its minerals and other elements for power and to physically replicate themselves.

Collective intelligence...
It is also reported by many Morgellons victims that the fibers and other Morgellons items exhibit a kind of collective intelligence within the bodies they have parasitized. The fibers are motile and can be easily observed to move and to reach out for nearby objects with a 10x to 30x scope. They are not bacterial or viral and can withstand blowtorch temperatures of 1400 F under laboratory conditions, researchers have already established.

The symptoms of Morgellons vary widely from easily recognized skin lesions which can appear over wide areas on the body - and sometimes over the entire body - which do not scab normally.

Strangely, Morgellons lesions have not been reported to become bacterially-infected. These lesions heal extremely slowly and leave white, pigment-free scars.

The mental and neurological effects of the Morgellons syndrome include brain fog, serious personality changes, fear, depression, suicidal thoughts, and physical coordination issues. Morgellons victims also suffer rapid spikes in body heat levels, severe malaise, and chronic fatigue.

It is established that Morgellons fibers are commonly found in all body fluids and orifices. They have been found in bone joints, and are believed to routinely achieve full body systemic penetration from major organs to the brain.

It is very simple to find Morgellons fibers on the skin of victims and their clothing and often throughout their homes, which many believe become permanently infested and pose a clear and present danger to any uninfected people who come into the homes of Morgellons victims.

The Centres for Disease Control started receiving enquiries from about 2006, and now are investigating more than 3,000 infection sites. They don't know what they are.

Entire families and extended families are now infected. However, the spreading of Morgellons does not occur in all who come into contact with the afflicted. There may be some form of 'immunity' some people possess. Why that is the case remains unknown.

Since the fibers can withstand temperatures in excess of 1400 F, assured sterilization of medical/dental reusable medical equipment and instruments is moot, sufferers say.

Conspiracy theories:
Conspirary-theories abound - and foremost amongst these are that the Centres for Disease Control's 'Morgellons study' -- being carried out by a Kaiser-Permanente group in Northern California from 2008 -- is considered to be 'a coverup and a farce'.

So what is really going on here? The Invasion of the Body Snatchers? All these people who show up with these painful, infectious lesions clearly are not imagining things. Nobody in his right mind would want to even begin to think up these creepy crawlies which seem to be causing this painful and distasteful condition. And everyone in a family seems to get infected with it: from the very young to the very old.

What does the Centres for Disease Control say about Morgellons?

They don't really know what they are, is the best they can come up with at the moment - but they also have confirmed that 'no, it's not really an imaginary disease. It's very very real to the sufferers.'

"We earnestly want to learn more about this unexplained illness, which affects the lives of those who suffer from it,” said Dr. Michele Pearson, principal investigator leading the study for the CDC, in a press release. “Those who suffer have questions, and we want to help them.”

“We have a team of epidemiologists, laboratorians and pathologists to carry out the study,” Pearson said.
"There is not textbook definition on this condition. There are many hypotheses about what might be causing and contributing it. And so it′s been a very frustrating journey, not only for the patients, but also for the providers who provide care to them."

The CDC researchers just haven't found any common denominators yet to link all these victims to this odd condition: some cluster families live in Florida and Texas, others in California, all next or very close to the ocean, as do many millions of other Americans who are perfectly healthy.... No help there then.

The CDC had received some 1,200 official inquiries about Morgellons Disease by 2008, as the sufferers refer to this, nothing that "persons who suffer from this unexplained skin condition report a range of cutaneous (skin) symptoms including crawling, biting and stinging sensations; granules, threads, fibers, or black speck-like materials on or beneath the skin; and/or skin lesions (e.g., rashes or sores).

"In addition to skin manifestations, some sufferers also report fatigue, mental confusion, short term memory loss, joint pain, and changes in vision. The cause of this condition is unknown, and the medical community has insufficient information to determine whether persons who identify themselves as having this condition have a common cause for their symptoms or share common risk factors.

"To assist in learning more about this condition, CDC is conducting an epidemiologic investigation, announced on January 16, 2008.

Dr. Michele Pearson is the principal investigator for the CDC. Also investigating is Dr. Joe Selby, Director of the Kaiser Permanente′s Northern California Division of Research.

The conspiracy theorists have already dismissed this investigation as a 'cover-up'-- but it's not exactly clear why they would want to say this.

It all sounds Pretty Scary.

One fact is certain: people are desperate to get rid of the little horrors. Some people put YouTube videos on line showing that these skin-fibres can be dissolved with lavish dollops of millk. Others say that they have tried chasing them down methodically with oil of eucalyptus, and report that a determined plan of assault for many months does lessen them somewhat.

Whatever it's caused by it seems to be very difficult to get rid of. And it's infectious. We live in very strange times.

The Jonas Brothers are set to begin their World Tour 2009 soon, and fans are set to line up the ticket sales counters. Now a new website posts free Jonas Brothers ticket giveaways, backstage passes, and meet and greet passes for fans. The Jonas Brothers concert tickets regularly become sold out within minutes of going on sale, so thousands of people are flocking to the Fan Club website to join. The Fan Club, known as Team Jonas, membership allows members to purchase tickets for the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 early, while the general public has to wait longer. But many fan club members were complaining that the seats were less-than-desired for the Burning Up Tour. Fans are wondering if the Fan Club only has blocks that are not the best seats in the house, and the best seats are saved for higher paying Ticket Agency customers.

Either way, one can only expect similar frustration and ticket scalping problems that seems to be the norm in these crazed scrambles to get tickets for these tween and teen Disney Channel idols.

ABC Radio newscaster George Weber has been found dead

Veteran ABC Radio newscaster George Weber has been found dead in his Brooklyn, N.Y., apartment in what police believe was a homicide.

ABC News radio anchorman George Weber has been found dead in his Brooklyn apartment.

Police responded to a missing person call at 9 a.m. Sunday and found Weber, 50, in his apartment with a wound to his neck, according to a police report. Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and pronounced him dead.

An investigation into Weber's death is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the death of our colleague and friend George Weber who was the victim of what police have deemed a homicide at his home in Brooklyn," said Steve Jones, vice president and general manager of ABC News Radio.

"An investigation has been launched by NYPD and we have been assisting them," he added. "Our condolences and prayers go out to George's family and friends at this very difficult time."

Theater Legend Arthur Laurents Comes Back to Broadway With 'West Side Story¨'

- His early days were spent writing for radio, but he found his calling in the theater. However, it wasn't until his third play — The Time of the Cuckoo — that he had a hit.

- Following that success, he penned the books for two legendary musical classics, West Side Story and Gypsy. He would go on to direct the latter twice on Broadway (in 1975 and 2008), receiving Tony Award nominations both times.

- He has won the Tony twice, for writing Hallelujah, Baby! and directing La Cage aux Folles. His other stage credits include I Can Get It for You Wholesale, Anyone Can Whistle, Nick & Nora and Do I Hear a Waltz?, the musical version of his Time of the Cuckoo.

- For the silver screen, he wrote the scripts for The Snake Pit (for which he was infamously denied screen credit by the Writers Guild of America), Rope (starring his then-lover Farley Granger), Anastasia,Bonjour Tristesse, The Way We Were and The Turning Point. For the latter, he was nominated for two Academy Awards, as both writer and co-producer.

- His work can currently be seen on Broadway with the much-anticipated bilingual revival of West Side Story, which officially opened last night. Of the new production, he has said, "This show will be radically different from any other production of West Side Storyever done."

Isaiah Thomas: Who Is He?

You know the name, of course. First, to address the obvious question: Washington freshman point guard Isaiah Thomas is not related to former NBA star Isiah Thomas (note the different spellings). But there is a direct connection: The younger Thomas was named after the older one when James Thomas lost a bet in 1989. The younger Thomas’ dad wagered with a friend on the outcome of the NBA Finals series between the Lakers and Pistons, but instead of money, he put the first name of his yet-to-be-born son on the line. The Pistons won, and a few months later Isaiah was born (mom signed off because of its Biblical roots).

The 5-foot-8 Thomas has lived up to his name pretty well. He leads the Huskies (25-8) in scoring (15.4 ppg) and was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Can Mississippi State (23-12) handle him today in the first round of the NCAA tournament (3:45 p.m., CBS)? That’ll depend largely on the play of MSU’s own freshman point guard, Dee Bost. The two have faced off before, in prep school last year. Bost was a shooting guard at the time but matched up with Thomas a little; Bost outscored him 21-18, and his Hargrave Military Academy team beat Thomas’ South Kent (Conn.) School.

“He’s a much more of scoring point guard. I’m probably more of a scoring, and a pass(ing guard),” Bost said. Thomas does have that score-first mentality, a mentality Bost has as well but has managed to subdue to a healthy degree. Thomas is quick and knows how to finish, so it’s understandable that he wants to light it up. Size has been no object, of course. When I talked with Thomas, he was sitting in his locker, with room to spare. He remembers Bost well, but said, “I’m just going into the game like any other game. I’m not going to really key on him, I’m just going to key on trying to get this win.”

Honestly, I’m psyched to watch how this point guard matchup unfolds. As well as the matchup with big men Jarvis Varnado, a two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year, and Jon Brockman, a two-time All-Pac-10 first-teamer. Those two were included intoday’s notebook.

But back to Bost and Thomas for a moment. Bost has been hard to rattle, leading State to wins at places like Bud Walton Arena, Rupp Arena and, of course, St. Pete Times Forum in the SEC Tournament. Thomas’ foray onto the “big stage,” as he calls it, hasn’t gone so well. In two games of the Pac-10 Tournament at Staples Center, he scored 31 total points but shot just 11 of 29 from the field with one assist and four turnovers.

Here’s a quick statistical comparison of Bost and Thomas:

• Bost: 11.1 ppg, 36.0% field goals, 34.2% 3-pointers, 3.6 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.52 assist/turnover ratio
• Thomas: 15.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 42.5% field goals, 29.8% 3-pointers, 2.5 apg, –0.95 assist/turnover ratio

"Twilight" fans can get up close and personal with some of the cast and crew who worked on the movie when it filmed on location inOregon. Friday night, the Wood VillageWalmart hosts a "Twilight"-themed event that includes giveaways, refreshments, shopping and opportunities to get autographs and chat with locals who were part of the "Twilight"experience.

As Twilighters know, the DVD won't be released until 12:01 a.m. Fans are advised to get in line for the cast party between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday night, which takes place in the "Twilight Shop" inside Walmart. East Tennessee State University

The excited whispers started midway through the first half, moving through the stands here and throughout offices and in-boxes across the country. Did you hear? Little East Tennessee State was standing strong against mighty Pittsburgh, a team with realistic championship aspirations.

nstead of setting history, though, E.T.S.U. only continued a trend as old as the N.C.A.A. tournament itself. Pittsburgh won, 72-62, in the second of four games played here Friday. But for the way E.T.S.U. had played, the remaining fans still stood and applauded at the game’s conclusion.

This game could go down as the best opportunity a No. 16 seed ever had to topple a No. 1 — at least since the last time E.T.S.U. almost did it. Those who follow E.T.S.U. said it did not play particularly well on Friday, shooting an abysmal 30.7 percent, and they made only 4 of 22 3-point attempts.

Other than the Panthers following that traveled here, the arena adopted East Tennessee State and its lovable, bearded and blue mascot, Bucky the Buccaneer, early on.

That love reached its apex near the end of the second half, when E.T.S.U. players snagged two offensive rebounds and swung the ball outside to guard Courtney Pigram, who drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing to cut the deficit to 59-57. The Buccaneers immediately forced another turnover with their press. And the crowd erupted.

The aftermath sent East Tennessee State from elation to deflation, as Pittsburgh forward DeJuan Blair converted a 3-point play, which point guard Levance Fields followed with a driving layup for a 64-59 advantage. When Ashton Gibbs made a 3-pointer from behind the top of the key a few minutes later, Pittsburgh led comfortably, 67-59.

The epic upset bid had failed.

It was Blair who rescued the Panthers, muscling inside for buckets, playing with abandon his tight teammates seemed to lack. He finished with 27 points and 16 rebounds. Pittsburgh will play Oklahoma State, an athletic, up-tempo team who could pose problems for the Panthers, on Sunday afternoon in the second round.

Of course, no team seeded 16th in the N.C.A.A. men’s tournament has ever beaten a No. 1 seed. But some teams have come close. And that list, believe it or not, contains East Tennessee State.

In fact, this season marked the 20th anniversary of the E.T.S.U. team that nearly knocked off top-seeded Oklahoma in 1989. The Buccaneers took Mookie Blaylock, Stacy King and company to the buzzer, losing, 72-71. Three more N.C.A.A. tournament appearances followed.
